Sage on the Side

About this Blog

This blog shares the musings of a college professor who embraces change in education and enjoys sharing stories and experiences with current students and teachers who were previously her students.  Near the end of each semester, she laments that she has not had time to teach her students everything she feels she could, and that there is more they need to know.  In spring 2014, some students called this “teacher guilt,” and asked if she had a blog.  They suggested that she start one and continue to share her “wisdom” and stories with students after they leave her classes.  So-o-o, she is going to give it a whirl and try to post weekly.

The blog title, Sage on the Side, is derived from two models of instructional delivery widely known in education:  the sage on stage and the guide on the side.  The first is the traditional lecturer, who delivers instruction mainly through lecturing to students.  The second is the facilitator who encourages students to inquire and explore as they learn with the guidance of the instructor.  The sage on the side shares information with students through many means and guides them as they explore and learn.
